What is A2P SMS?

A2P stands for Application-to-Person. This refers to SMS that software sends automatically to people, triggered by an event such as an order, a login, or an appointment. Typical senders are online shops, banks, medical practices, logistics companies, and SaaS applications. A2P SMS is also called business SMS, enterprise SMS, or professional SMS.

What companies use A2P SMS for

A2P stands for Application-to-Person. This refers to SMS that software sends automatically to people, triggered by an event such as an order, a login, or an appointment. Typical senders are online shops, banks, medical practices, logistics companies, and SaaS applications. A2P SMS is also called business SMS, enterprise SMS, or professional SMS.

Security

Confirmation codes and 2FA

One-time passwords (OTP) for login, registration, or payment authorization. Seconds matter here, so these SMS are sent via the fastest sending method.

Efficiency

Appointment reminders

Medical practices, repair shops, hairdressers, and public authorities automatically send reminders and thereby reduce missed appointments. With two-way SMS, the customer confirms by reply.

Logistics

Order and shipping notifications

Online shops inform about order confirmation, shipping and delivery, optionally with a link to shipment tracking.

Fraud prevention

Security and account warnings

Banks, credit card providers and platforms report transactions, new logins or changes to the account.

Monitoring

System and IT alarms

Monitoring systems alert the on-call team, even at night and independently of email or internet on the receiving device.

Workforce management

Employee and operations communication

Shift plan changes, shift cancellations or deployment alarms reach employees directly on their mobile phones without a company app.

Delivery quality

Why the sending route determines delivery

Not every A2P SMS reaches its destination via the same route. Reputable providers deliver via official connections to the network operators, so-called white routes or direct routes. Low-cost providers sometimes use grey routes: detours via foreign networks or SIM farms disguised as P2P. Such SMS are cheaper but arrive late, without the correct sender, or not at all. Network operators are increasingly blocking them.

LOX24 is directly connected to all major network operators. With the „Direct“ sending type, your SMS run via these connections without detours, with your sender name and a real delivery report.

  • Direct connection — Official connections to the major network operators
  • Real delivery report — For every SMS, the actual status from the network
  • Own sender — Company name instead of unknown number

Your benefits

What to look for in an A2P SMS provider

Reliable delivery
A2P SMS are often time-critical; a 2FA code is no longer useful after ten minutes. LOX24 usually delivers SMS within 2–6 seconds and offers an availability of 99.9 %.
Custom sender name
Recipients are more likely to trust an SMS if they recognize the sender. With LOX24, you send under your company name (up to 11 characters). In some countries, registration is required for this, and LOX24 supports you with it.
Protection against SMS fraud
Public forms for login or registration are a popular target for SMS pumping: attackers trigger mass SMS to expensive international numbers. With filters, country restrictions, and cost limits, LOX24 stops such attacks before they cause costs.
Data protection under German law
A2P SMS often contain sensitive data such as codes, appointments, or account information. LOX24 processes them exclusively on servers in Germany, is subject to telecommunications secrecy under Section 3 TDDDG, and provides a data processing agreement.
Transparent costs
You only pay per SMS sent, from 1 cent depending on the destination country, from 7 cents to Germany. There is no basic fee and no contract term, so no fixed costs when volume fluctuates.
Receive replies
Many A2P applications need a return channel, for example for appointment confirmations. With a virtual phone number from LOX24, replies arrive directly in your application via webhook.
Integration

A2P SMS for PHP, Python, Java, Go, C#, JavaScript

Your application sends an HTTP request to the LOX24 REST API for each message, and for large volumes, bundled via the bulk SMS API. Without your own programming, you can use ready-made integrations such as Zapier, Bitrix24, or Synology, via Mail2SMS, or via the LOX24 MCP server for AI agents.

api.lox24.eu/sms
curl -X POST https://api.lox24.eu/sms \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -H 'X-LOX24-AUTH-TOKEN: 1234567:e3f3a759b6…' \
  -d '{
    "sender_id": "My Sender",
    "phone": "+49751234567",
    "service_code": "direct",
    "text": "Test message",

    "is_unicode": true,
    "callback_data": "123456",
    "voice_lang": "DE"
}'

A single curl call is enough – send JSON data to the /sms endpoint, with the authentication token included in the header.

api.lox24.eu/sms
'My Sender',
    'text'         => "First line\nSecond line",
    'service_code' => 'direct',
    'phone'        => '+49751234567',
    'is_unicode'   => true,
]);

$curl = curl_init();
curl_setopt_array($curl, [
    CURLOPT_POST           => true,
    CURLOPT_URL            => $uri,
    CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS     => $body,
    CURLOPT_HTTPHEADER     => [
        "X-LOX24-AUTH-TOKEN: {$token}",
        'Content-Type: application/json',
    ],
    CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER => true,
]);

$response = curl_exec($curl);
$code = curl_getinfo($curl, CURLINFO_HTTP_CODE);
curl_close($curl);

if (201 === $code) {
    echo 'Success';
}

With curl, you can use our HTTP interface in PHP and send SMS with just a few lines.

package main

import (
	"bytes"
	"encoding/json"
	"net/http"
)

func main() {
	const URL = "https://api.lox24.eu/sms"
	const Token = "1234567:e3f3a759b6677959b6ebfc…"

	payload := map[string]interface{}{
		"sender_id":    "My Sender",
		"phone":        "+49751234567",
		"service_code": "direct",
		"text":         "Test message",
		"is_unicode":   true,
	}

	body, _ := json.Marshal(payload)
	req, _ := http.NewRequest("POST", URL, bytes.NewBuffer(body))
	req.Header.Add("X-LOX24-AUTH-TOKEN", Token)
	req.Header.Add("Content-Type", "application/json")

	res, err := (&http.Client{}).Do(req)
	if err != nil {
		return
	}
	defer res.Body.Close()
}

In Go, you only need the „net/http“ and „encoding/json“ packages to send your SMS to the gateway.

  },
  body: payload,
});

In Node.js, the built-in `fetch` function sends your payload directly to the SMS API.

FAQ

Common questions about A2P SMS

Software automatically sends A2P SMS (application-to-person), for example a confirmation code after login. P2P SMS (person-to-person) are written manually by a person on their phone. A2P SMS via an SMS gateway such as LOX24 are intended for automated sending. Mobile network operators treat the two types differently.

Technically, this is possible, but in practice you should not do it. Most mobile contracts prohibit automated bulk sending, and mobile network operators block suspicious SIM cards. In addition, there are no delivery reports, no option to use your own sender ID, and low throughput. An A2P gateway such as LOX24 is designed for automated sending and offers transparent per-SMS billing.

Grey routes are unofficial delivery routes in which A2P SMS are routed indirectly or via SIM farms and disguised as P2P SMS. They are cheaper but unreliable: SMS messages arrive late, with an incorrect sender ID, or not at all, and mobile network operators are increasingly blocking them. LOX24 delivers messages via official direct connections to mobile network operators.

That depends on the destination country. In Germany and most European countries, you can send directly using your company name. Some countries require prior registration of the sender, and LOX24 supports you with this. Which countries are affected is stated in the price list/documentation.

For purely service-related messages that the customer expects, such as a requested code or an order confirmation, no separate advertising consent is generally required. Promotional SMS, by contrast, may only be sent with explicit consent. LOX24 supports this with opt-in and opt-out functions. For your specific case, we recommend a legal review.
