What is an SMS MCP server?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI applications use external tools. An SMS MCP server gives an AI agent tools for sending and receiving SMS. The agent decides on its own when to use them, for example when you write: "Text the on-call team that server 3 is unreachable."

The LOX24 MCP server connects your agent to the LOX24 SMS gateway. You don't need to write any code or integrate an API: just enter the server URL and API key in your AI client, and you're done.

Features

The tools of the LOX24 MCP server

The LOX24 MCP server provides your AI agent with five tools: two for sending, one for reading incoming SMS, and two for your account. The agent sees them under exactly these names and chooses the right tool on its own, depending on what you ask it to do.

Setup

Set up the LOX24 SMS MCP server

You need a LOX24 API v2 key, which you create in your customer account under “API Settings”. Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Gemini CLI, Codex, and Windsurf connect directly via HTTP, with no installation required. For Claude Desktop, Cline, Continue, and Zed, use the small proxy mcp-remote, which requires Node.js 18+.

# 1. Add the LOX24 MCP server (directly, without Node.js)
claude mcp add --transport http lox24 https://mcp.lox24.eu/mcp \
  --header "X-LOX24-API-KEY: YOUR_API_KEY"

# 2. Verify the connection
claude mcp list
# 1. Open or create the file: ~/.cursor/mcp.json
# 2. Add the LOX24 MCP server (directly, without Node.js)

  }
}

# 3. Restart Cursor
# 1. Create the file in your project: .vscode/mcp.json
# 2. Add the LOX24 MCP server (directly, without Node.js)
# The API key is requested at startup and is not stored in plain text.

Help

Troubleshooting

“Tool not showing up”

  • Check the server URL and API key in your configuration.
  • For Claude Desktop: Is mcp-remote installed? npm install -g mcp-remote
  • Restart the app completely.
  • Check your client's log file.

“Authentication failed” / 401 Error

  • Without a valid key, the server responds with 401 – missing X-LOX24-API-KEY header.
  • Are you using an API v2 key?
  • Is the header spelled correctly: X-LOX24-API-KEY: YOUR_API_KEY?
  • Is there no space after the key?

“Connection timeout”

  • Is https://mcp.lox24.eu reachable from your computer, for example when behind a corporate firewall?
  • Increase the timeout in your client's settings.

macOS: “npx not found”

  • Install Node.js, for example with brew install node.
  • Or specify the full path: /usr/local/bin/npx (Apple Silicon: /opt/homebrew/bin/npx).

Windows: “npx not recognized”

  • Check that Node.js is installed and added to your PATH.
  • Or specify the full path: C:\Program Files\nodejs\npx.cmd.
  • Restart your terminal or computer once.
MCP SMS Use Cases

What AI Agents Can Do with SMS

From server alerts to customer outreach: these workflows can be automated with the LOX24 MCP server.

DEVOPS

Automated Server Alerts

The agent analyzes server logs and immediately notifies the on-call team by SMS or voice call when critical errors occur, even at night.

PRODUCTIVITY

Personal Assistant

The agent sorts your emails and notifies you by SMS when an important message arrives or an urgent appointment is coming up.

SUPPORT

Proactive Customer Service

The agent identifies unhappy customers in tickets and reviews and offers a callback by SMS before the situation escalates.
Sales

Coupons and Recommendations

The agent analyzes orders and sends suitable coupons or product recommendations by SMS.

Appointments

Handle Reminders and Cancellations

The agent checks the calendar, sends customers an SMS reminder the day before, and reads their replies. If someone cancels, it suggests a replacement appointment by SMS and enters the confirmation in the calendar.

Personal

Organize Shift Coverage

If an employee calls in sick, the agent sends an SMS to suitable colleagues to ask who can step in. It enters the first confirmation in the schedule, and everyone else receives a brief message that the request has been filled.

Prompts

What You Can Tell Your Agent

"Send an SMS to +4915112345678: Your appointment tomorrow at 10 a.m. is confirmed."

Tool: sendSms

"Call +4915112345678 and read out: Your order is ready for pickup."

Tool: sendVoiceMessage

"Schedule an SMS to +4915112345678 for tomorrow at 8 a.m.: Reminder about the inspection."

Tool: sendSms · deliveryAt

"Show me all SMS received today and summarize the cancellations."

Tool: getIncomings

"Check my LOX24 balance and tell me if it's enough for 300 SMS."

Tool: getBalance

"If the log contains an error marked 'CRITICAL', send an SMS to the on-call service."

Tool: sendSms

Security

Security and Cost Control for AI Agents

An AI agent with SMS access can send real messages to real people, and every message costs credit. These measures help you stay in control.

Confirmation Before Sending

Most AI clients ask for confirmation before every tool call. Keep this prompt enabled for sendSms and sendVoiceMessage .

Spending Limit in Your LOX24 Account

Use daily limits and country filters to cap how much the agent can send at most.

Separate API Key for the Agent

This way, you can block it at any time without affecting your other integrations.

Protect Your API Key

Don't write it into repositories or shared configuration files.

Be Careful with External Content

If your agent reads emails, web pages, or tickets, they may contain hidden instructions that trick it into sending SMS (prompt injection). Confirmation and spending limits protect you against this as well.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About the SMS MCP Server

Via an SMS MCP server. With the LOX24 MCP server, you enter the server URL https://mcp.lox24.eu/mcp and your LOX24 API key in your AI client. The agent can then use the tool sendSms to send SMS to 880 networks worldwide.

Tested with Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Cline, Continue, and Zed. In principle, any MCP client that supports remote servers with custom HTTP headers will work, for example VS Code with GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, or OpenAI Codex.

Not directly at the moment. These apps connect to remote servers via OAuth sign-in, while the LOX24 MCP server uses an API key in the header. Use Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, or one of the other supported clients instead.

No, not for Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Gemini CLI, Codex, and Windsurf, which connect directly via HTTP. Only Claude Desktop, Cline, Continue, and Zed connect to the server through the proxy mcp-remote , which requires Node.js 18+.

Yes. With the parameter deliveryAt (Unix timestamp), the agent schedules SMS and voice calls in advance, for example for a reminder the next morning.

Yes. With the tool getIncomings the agent reads incoming SMS and can respond to them, for example by summarizing cancellations or replying. To receive replies on your own number, you need a virtual number from LOX24.

Same as with the API: you pay per message according to the LOX24 price list, starting at 7 cents to Germany. The MCP server itself costs nothing extra, with no base fee and no contract term.

Keep confirmation before every send enabled in your AI client, and set a cost limit and country filters in your LOX24 account. We recommend using a dedicated API key for the agent, which you can block at any time.

Yes. LOX24 is a European provider, all servers are located exclusively in Europe, and the content of your SMS is protected by telecommunications secrecy. LOX24 provides a data processing agreement upon request.

Yes. After free registration, you receive a starting credit of 50 cents and can create an API key right away. There is no contract term.
